What is simultaneous interpretation equipment?
Simultaneous interpretation equipment is a set of electronic devices used to transmit the audio signal from a conference room—or any other space where an event is taking place—to the interpretation booth, and simultaneously transmit the interpreters’ audio signal from the booth to the listeners who need the interpretation in a language different from the floor language.
The main components are the following:
Transmitters – Transmitters are the core component of simultaneous interpretation systems. Each transmitter “transmits,” as the name suggests, a signal on a specific channel that has been previously assigned. That channel corresponds to a particular language. Depending on the number of languages used during the event (either spoken on the main floor or provided by interpreters supporting attendees who need interpretation into their own language), there will be an equivalent number of transmitters.
For example, if a conference includes speakers presenting in Spanish and English, and there are also Portuguese and French attendees who require interpretation into their own languages, the system will need four transmitters—one per language (Spanish, English, Portuguese, and French).
Transmitters can send signals via radio frequency or infrared, depending on the system being used.
Receivers – Receivers are probably the most recognizable component for the general public—they are the classic “earpiece” or headset worn to listen to the interpretation provided by the interpreters through their assigned channels. If the transmitter transmits, the receiver “receives.” Simple as that.
Consoles – Interpretation consoles (also known as interpreter desks, control consoles, etc.) are essentially the interpreter’s control panel. They consist of a console with various buttons and switches, connected to a headset and microphone, or an integrated headset‑microphone unit.
Through this device, the interpreter in the booth can choose which channel to listen to (the floor audio or another interpreter’s channel when working with “relay”), adjust the volume, select which channel to speak on (for example, an English–Spanish interpreter may choose to speak on the English or Spanish channel depending on the speaker’s language), and mute or activate the microphone.
Each booth typically has two interpretation consoles—one per interpreter.
Booths – The interpretation booth is the enclosed space where interpreters work. It is a lightweight, acoustically insulated cabin with a front window that allows interpreters to see the speakers clearly. Inside, there are two chairs and a long table where the two consoles are placed, along with additional devices such as laptops or tablets used to view presentations, online dictionaries, and other reference materials.
Booths are usually placed at the back of the room, facing the stage, so interpreters have a clear view of the speakers (body language is crucial for accurate interpretation) and any visual elements such as screens or slide projectors.
